The debut performance of the new story in Kathakali 'Drona Charitham' was held on 06 Oct 2014 at Viswambhara Temple premise, Kottakkal. The Attakatha for this was written by  Kottakkal  V P Pradeep, Kathakali artist at PSV Natyasangam. He created attakkatha (kathakali story) with the help of his Asans (Master Trainers) and other scholars from Kathakali along with PSV Natyasangam, the Kathakali troupe owned and managed by Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala.

Pradeep, who has been associated with the institution for the last 17 years, started writing this Kadakalippadam (the songs narrating the story in Kathakali) about three years back. He consulted many scholars like Jhayath Balan, editor at the publication division of Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal Chandrasekaran, artist and ex- Principal of PVS Natya Sangam, Kottakkal Kesavan Kundlayar, the Artist and Principal of PSV Natya Sangam, other senior artists like  Kottakkal Narayanan, Kottakkal Madhu and Vengeri Nayanan. The team also created acting manual, music and casting for the play.

Dronacharitham tells the story of Dronacharya, the warrior and master trainer of Kauravas and Pandavas from the epic Mahabharatha. This Kathakali play narrates two important incidents from the long story of Dronacharya which are relevant even in the contemporary scenario. The encounters of Drona  with his  childhood class mate King Drupadan and the heart-endearing  story of Ekalavyan, son of a Nishada (tribe) chief who trained himself in archery by considering Drona as his Guru. Six characters - Dhronacharyan, King Drupadan, Arjunan, Ekalavyan, Kripi and Bheeshmar- are appearing in this 5-6 hour long Kathakali play.

The artists participated in the debut performance were Kottakkal Chandrasekharan (Dronacharya), Kottakkal Kesavan Kundlayar (Arjunan), Kottakkal Sudheer (Drupadan), Ekalavyan (Kottakkal Devadas), Kottakkal RajMohan (Kripi) and Kottakkal Sunil (Bheeshmar),  Kottakkal Narayanan, Kottakkal Madhu, Vengeri Nayanan, Kottakkal Santhosh,  Kottakkal Vineesk (singers), Kottakkal Prasad, Kottakkal Vijayaraghavan and Kottakkal Maneesh (Chenda-percussionists), Kottakkal Radhakrishnan, Kottakkal, Ravi and Kottakkal Subhash (Madhalam percussionists), Kottakkal Satheesh, Kottakkal Anil and Kottakkal Vishnu (make up artists).
