The training of Kalarippayattu has resumed at the traditional Kalari ( the arena for training Kalarippayattu) at Kanathur Kurumbakkavu, Kannur, Kerala. Developed as a combat training, Kalarippayattu is now more famous as a comprehensive system for self discipline and self defense, which give physical as well as mental fitness and flexibility to the body.

Kanathurkavu, the abode of the deities Goddess Kurumba Bhagavathy and the God Daivathaar is an ancient temple situated in Kannur town. According to Satheesan, Joint Secretary of the temple management committee, the Kalari associated with the temple is an ancient one and a century before it was functioning at the present Daivathaar kandi School. During the time of British rule, the government banned Kalarippayattu and hence they forced to close down the Kalari.  It was during 1997-98, the temple authorities established a new Kalari at the premise of the temple under the leadership of the master trainer Attadappa Karunakaran Gurukkal. In 2007, the Kalari renovated to the present tiled roof structure. The Kalari here is a typical Kuzhi Kalari, 5ft deep, 42 ft size, Guruthara, Poothara and all.

Since April 2012, Rakesh Gurukkal is giving training to the students. Rakesh Gurukkal started his training in Kalarippyattu from Sree Bharath Kalari in 1984 under the Gurukkal M Vijayan and later he went to France to work with a folk theatre company Zingaro.
