Sopanam School of Panchavadyam to Organise Sopanam Vadyolsavam 2017

Sopanam School of Panchavadyam based at Valayamkulam, near Changaramkulam in Malappuram district is organizing “Sopanam Vadyolsavam, a festival highlighting the traditional percussion orchestras and ensemble with other traditional musical instruments of Kerala, from 07- 12 May 2017 at the premise of Perumparambu Shiva temple, near Edappal.  

Sopanam School of Panchavadyam based at Valayamkulam, near Changaramkulam in Malappuram district is organizing “Sopanam Vadyolsavam, a festival highlighting the traditional percussion orchestras and ensemble with other traditional musical instruments of Kerala, from 07- 12 May 2017 at the premise of Perumparambu Shiva temple, near Edappal. 

The aim of this event is to familiarize thirty plus traditional orchestrations like, Melappadam, Thimlayidachil, Parisha vadyam, Mulam Chenda Melam, Arabana muttu, Kolkkali, Udukkukottu, Thudikottu, Nandruni pattu, Pulluvanpattu, etc. and to bring together the artists and art connoisseurs to a single platform, especially those from the geographical area of 50 km radius.

An exhibition of musical instruments used in India, costumes and ornaments of traditional performing arts of Kerala like Kathakali, Kutiyattam, Tholpavakoothu, Thirayattam, Poothan, Thira, etc, and a photo gallery covering the maestros of percussionists and musicians of the past are part of the event.

A public committee has set up for the smooth running of the event under the chairmanship of Padmasree Matannur Sankarankutty Marar, the world renowned Chenda percussionist from Kerala. The other personalities in the organizing committee include Kariyannur Narayannan Nambuthiri (Thimila percussionist & trainer at Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed Unversity.), Alamkode Leelakrishnan (poet & writer), Manoj Embranthiri (Chief priest at Perumparambu Shiva Kshethram and former priest of Malikappuram temple, Sabarimala), Advocate K T Ajayan, Santhosh Alamkode (Director, Sopanam School of Panchavadyam) and others.

Established in 2010, Sopanam  School of Panchavadyam is involved in the training and performance of traditional orchestrations like Panchavadyam, Melam, Keli, Sopana Sangeetham, Kombu pattu, Kuzhalpattu etc. The school is giving training in the musical instruments –Chenda, Thimila, Madhalam, Edakka, Kombu, Kuzhal and Elathalam through its 20 centres.
