With an objective to learn, share and impart the Traditional / Local Knowledge systems practiced in and around the banks of River Bharatha Puzha, the Vayali Folklore Group was formed in 2004. At present, the Vayali Folklore Group is involved in many community activities and has become an integral part of the village life. The members of the group has collected and documented many folksongs and folk performances from the region.  The performing group of Vayali conducts many art performances in the village, different parts of Kerala and India also. Inspired by the experience from Japan, during their visit in 2007, Vayali has developed a music band with Bamboo instruments alone, which is getting much recognition from Kerala and other cities in India. Through the responsible tourism initiatives, supported by many other travel companies, Vayali is instrumental in promoting and supporting local economy, artisans and artists. The constant involvement of Vayali has resulted in attracting the new generation into many other activities, like nature conservation, addressing socially relevant issues, etc.

Vinod Nambiar, the Director of Vayali Group said, “Entering into the responsible tourism space was one among the major changes that we had adopted. It brought quite a good number of travelers to Vayali. The evening performances in our village created a space for the villagers to gather and participate in the social expression, which they used to experience years back, in different social contexts. This has resulted in attracting more and more youngsters to our social actions and created a cultural volunteerism in action.”

Vayali Folklore Group, based at Arangottukara in Thrissur district is managed by a 12 member Executive Committee, headed by K K Sasidharan (President), Pradeep Arangottukara (Secretary), K K Unnikrishnan (Programme Coordinator) and Vinod Nambiar (Director). (www.vayali.org)
