Two more regular Venues for the Sanskrit theatre Kutiyattam

Kutiyattam Kendra, Thiruvananthapuram started conducting Kutiyattam on monthly basis in two more venues- Kannur and Harippad. The Kendra has been conducting fortnightly performances since 2012 at Government Museum in Thiruvananthapuram, the regular venue.

Kutiyattam Kendra, Thiruvananthapuram started conducting Kutiyattam on monthly basis in two more venues- Kannur and Harippad. The Kendra has been conducting fortnightly performances since 2012 at Government Museum in Thiruvananthapuram, the regular venue.

The inaugural performance at Kannur was on 11 November 2015. The monthly performance is scheduled on the second Wednesday of every month. The venue is Jawahar Library Hall,  Near Old Bus stand, Kannur.  Naimisharanyam, a cultural organization from Kannur is the partnering organization.

At Harippad (Alappuzha Dt), the performance is held at the Traditional theatre, Kuthambalam of Haripad Sree Subrahmania Swamy Temple and was inaugurated on 26 January 2016. Following the tradition of Lunar calendar, the performance at this venue is scheduled to conduct on 'Shashtti' day of every month.

The programes at Thiruvananthapuram are being conducted on the first and third Wednesday of every month. In all these venues the performance of Kutiyattam or its allied arts like Nangiarkoothu, Chakyar koothu etc will be held in the evening (6pm), which also include a lecture-demonstration on the hand gestures in Kutiyattam and about the episode by a competent practicing artist.

Kutiyattam is one of the oldest surviving theatrical traditions of India, honoured by UNESCO in 2001 as 'Masterpieces of oral and intangible heritage of humanity'. The Kutiyattam Kendra, Thiruvananthapuram, was set up in  2007 by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi. Mr. K K Gopalakrishnan is the Director of the centre.
