Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum to set up Nakshatra Vanam in Schools of Kerala

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum, a unit of Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala in association with the publication group Mathrubhumi have started implementing their new project ‘Nakshatra Vanam’ in schools across Kerala and select metros Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru.

Nakshatra Vanam literally means the forest of Stars. It is a concept of mythological garden comprising of 27 species of trees, each representing a zodiac star in the Malayalam almanac- Kanjiram tree (Nux vomica) for the star Aswathi, Nelli (Indian Gooseberry) for Bharani, Athi (Cluster fig) for Karthika, Njaval (Jamun) for Rohini, Karingali (Cucth tree) for Makeeryam and so on.

The state level inauguration of the project was held at Saraswathi Vidya Nikethan, Vattiyurkkavu in Thiruvananthapuram on 17 Aug 2017. The project envisages establishing Nakshatra Vanam / Star Forest in a total of 144 schools, including ten schools from each district in Kerala and selected schools from metros.

Established in December 2013, Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum at Thakkattussery, near Ollur in Thrissur district has separate galleries of diorama presentations about the history of Ayurveda from mythological, Vedic, medieval period to Kerala Ayurveda tradition. A library with huge collection of scripts and texts used by Ashtavaidyas, a multimedia touch screen digital library, 3D gallery detailing the education, treatment, medicine manufacturing, an audio-visual theatre, etc. are part of the museum. The museum is housed in a traditional two-storied building and a traditional Nalukettu in the same compound. Along with many other herbs, a ‘Nakshatra Vanam’ is also maintained in the museum compound.

Vaidyaratnam Oushadha Sala, based at Thrissur is a reputed and well known Ayurveda company promoted by the traditional Thaikattu Mooss family of Ayurveda physicians, one of the Ashtavaidya families. Apart from manufacturing medicines, the company engaged in Ayurveda treatment, research and promotion of Ayurvedic lifestyle.
