Naaras Ittyravi Nambuthithi alias Dr. N M Raveendran Namuthiri, a Vedic scholar and practitioner based at Edappal has started Vedic chanting classes at his residence as Gurukula system. At present four students of different age groups are studying under him. The classes have been started with the support and financial aid from South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, Tamilnadu as part of the programme of Govt of India to revive the traditional practices of India. In this Gurukulam recitation of Koushitaka Brahmanam is being taught.

According to Naaras Ittyravi Nambuthithi the focus of Koushitaki Brahmanam is the application side of the Rigveda in rituals like Yagnas and is not practiced by many.  He is the disciple of the late Guru Erkkara Raman Nambuthiri of Mukkuthala. The two styles of practice in Rigveda are Koushitaka Brahmanam and Aithereya Brahmanam. Those who practice Koushitaka Brahmanam  are known as Koushitakan and those who follow Aithereya Brahmanam are known as Aswalayan. In India Koushitakans are very few in number and many of them are from Sukapuram Gramam (Edappal & neighbourhood) in Kerala.

The classes are scheduled for 20 days in a month at an average of five hours per day. It requires three years to complete the course. Currently there are four Shishyas (students) undergoing the course and all are from traditional Veda practicing families. They are Erkkara Sankaran Sajith Nambuthiri, Kavupramarath Sankaranarayanan Nambuthiri, Kavupramarath Kesavan Nambuthiri (all from Edappal and nearby) and Satish Govind Deshmukh from Maharastra.
