Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University for Art & Culture, based at Cheruthuruthy in Thrissur District is organizing a series of performances of Kathakali, the classical dance-drama of Kerala. Different stories of Kathakali are to be played in the series titled 'Kathakali ashtakam' and the students of the university and the public will get a chance to see the performance and acting skills of various veteran artistes from the field of Kathakali, who belongs to different schools of Kathakali in Kerala. Supporting artistes like singers, percussionists etc from different schools will also be part of these performances.
The official inauguration of the programme was held on 19th Nov 2017 and hosted the play 'Keechakavadham' with lead roles enacted by Kottakkal Chandrasekhara Varrier and R L V Radhakrishnan. Some of the veteran actors participating in the series of performances are Vazhengada Vijayan, Kalamandalam Balasubrahmanian, Injakkad Ramachandran Pillai, Margi Vijayakumar, Kalamandalam Kesavan Nambuthiri, Kottakkal Nandakumar, Mathur Govindankutty, Sadanam Balakrishnan, Kottakkal Kesavan Kundlayar and others.
As per the press release from Registrar, Kerala Kalamandalam, two performances of Kathakali are scheduled for every month (first and third Sunday of the month) with the final performance scheduled for 18 Feb 2018. (For upcoming events see Art & ritual update- Central).
