Edaykka Miniatures by Sopanam School of Panchavadyam
Sopanam School of Panchavadyam, the training school for traditional percussions based at Edappal in Malappuram district has started making miniature craft of the instrument Edaykka. Edaykka, Thimila, Chenda, Madhalam etc are the traditional percussions of Kerala. These instruments are generally used in the traditional orchestrations Thayambaka, Paandi Melam, Panchaari melam, Panchavadyam, Keli, SopanaSangeetham etc. Through this project the school provides employment to some household ladies associated with the school as well as generates some income for the school during the Covid pandemic season.
Sopanam School is already in the field of manufacturing traditional percussions Chenda, Thimila, Edaykka, Thudi, Udukku etc. since four years. The miniature Edaykka is an up-cycled product made using the waste materials that are obtained while making these instruments.
Santhosh Alamkode, the Director of the school and a noted Thimila percussionist and trainer says that apart from a small income generated by selling Edaykka miniatures we also aims the propagation of the vast tradition of Kerala music and percussions.
